Machine Learning & Statistical Analysis in Sports Rankings PhD Scholarship

Scholarship Description
Research Field: Minimum Message Length (MML), sports rankings & statistics. Rating systems go back as far as Harkness (1949) & better-known Elo (1961) system for rating chess players. More recent attempts have been made to refine these systems in a variety of ways - we use the Bayesian information-theoretic MML principle from statistics, machine learning, econometrics & inductive inference, including dealing with the challenging Neyman-Scott-like situation. Our enhanced modelling will be for a range of games & sports including advantages such as first move (as in chess), home ground & location, surface (as in tennis). We will apply this to rating & ranking individuals & teams. We will also refine how quickly ratings can change depending upon the strength of the player. Application method: Email to David Dowe including (i) your full academic transcript (ii) a brief CV and (iii) a list with full contact details of at least 2 (preferably 3) referees mentioning the nature of your position
