Culture, Agency and Change
Scholarship Description
The way people relate to social change is partially informed by their cultural concepts of historicity (imagined relationship between past, present & future). People may use different experiences of time & representations of the past to project a vision of the future & their role in it. Better understanding of these connections will help to assess processes of planned social & cultural change. The successful candidate will have an interest in social & cultural change & a background in social anthropology or related discipline and will investigate how social agency & attempts to change the present are structured by particular historicities. Preferred regional focus of the PhD project is Tropical Australia & Melanesia, other regions will be considered. Stipend: $22,500 pa tax free plus $7,000 project support (one off) Contact: Prof Ton Otto ton.otto@jcu.edu.au (07) 4042 1891
