Financialisation and Land Acquisition

Scholarship Description

Finance corporations and various wealth funds are changing the patterns of ownership and control of farmlands nationally and globally. Some researchers consider this to be a foreign ‘land grab’ as wealthy nations seek to secure foods and biofuels from the poorer countries of the world. Others see this as investment for much-needed development. How is this new form of land control being experienced at the local level? Is this so-called ‘financialisation’ of agriculture producing benefits? Is it producing protest and resistance? Research team: Professor David Burch, Professor Geoffrey Lawrence, Dr Kristen Lyons and Dr Carol Richards
