Metal Organic Frameworks for Gas Top-Up PhD Studentship

Scholarship Description
Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship in the research area of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs). Metal-Organic Frameworks are an emerging class of materials with exceptional porosity on the molecular and mesoscale. Consisting of metal atoms or clusters linked in a periodic fashion through organic molecules, MOFs have pores of 0.5-5 nm diameter, walls just one atom thick, and surface areas of several thousand square metres per gram. The utility of these materials for gaseous fuel storage has recently been demonstrated. The position would involve the development of new MOFs, with a focus on light-weight metals such as Mg, Ca and Al. These MOFs would be specifically tailored towards hydrogen storage, natural gas (methane) storage or carbon dioxide capture applications. The Top-Up Scholarship will provide the opportunity to work with people who are leaders in their field, a stipend and a secondment to an international laboratory.
