Linguistics: New languages seen with new eyes

Scholarship Description

A full-time PhD scholarship is available in the Department of Linguistics, Macquarie University for commencement in 2010. The project will use a corpus of Australian SL (Auslan) and British SL (BSL) to collect evidence to support the claim that grammar is an emergent feature of language, driven by frequency and usage. The theoretical framework can be characterised as 'functional-cognitive usage-based construction grammar.' The candidate must learn to use ELAN multi-media annotation software to a high level of proficiency, have a good knowledge of a SL (preferably Auslan or BSL, or be prepared to learn Auslan/BSL to a basic conversational level) and excellent English skills. A cotutelle enrolment may be considered. Prospective applicants should contact the principal supervisor, Trevor Johnston, after referring to http://www.hdr.mq.edu.au/information_about/scholarships. Applicants should quote 2010086 on their application.
