PhD Scholarship (APAI)

Scholarship Description

This is an ARC Linkage grant awarded to Dr Dion Harrison & Prof. Daryl Joyce, the Centre for Native Floriculture, The University of Queensland, in collaboration with Aussie Colours Pty Ltd, Dr Kevin Davies at Crop & Food Research in Palmerston North, New Zealand. The project will be based at The University of Queensland, Gatton Campus with opportunities to conduct research in Dr Davies’ NZ lab. The project aims to understand the roles betalain pigments play in ameliorating abiotic & biotic stress in plants & to clone betalain biosynthesis genes for future manipulation of flower & foliage colour in ornamental plants. This project would examine one of these elements. Betalain pigments are found in only a small number of plant species. With regard to modifying flower colour, the betalain biosynthesis pathway is an attractive target for biotechnology as a range of vibrant colours can be achieved with relatively few enzymatic steps. Relocation allowance may be available.
