PhD in natural plant products

Scholarship Description
Australian farmers are running out of options for control of some weeds, particularly annual ryegrass, due to herbicide resistance. This project endeavours to address this problem through a novel approach to search for new compounds that are used in nature by plants to effect their own weed control. Natural compounds from plants can either be used directly as herbicides or used as leads for new chemical families of herbicides. This project aims to identify plants with biologically active compounds towards annual ryegrass and wild radish and evaluate their potential as natural herbicides by isolating and identifying novel natural compounds present in those plants that will then be able to be referred to the chemical industry for commercial evaluation In previous work, members of the Brassicaceae have been found to have high phytotoxic potential and warrant further study. However, this is a multidisciplinary project and there is scope for the student to take on the specific aspect
