Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
Scholarship Description
Increasing numbers of children are being raised by their grandparents. Grandparent care can come about because of Family Court orders, decisions of State child protection authorities or informal family decisions. There is growing policy interest in this issue - most of it centred on the financial, legal, health and wellbeing of grandparents. As yet, however, there is very little research focusing on the lives of children being raised by their grandparents. The holder of this scholarship will join a team headed by Professor Bettina Cass, Professor Deborah Brennan (both from SPRC) and Associate Professor Sue Green (Nura Gili). The team is working on an ARC Linkage Grant exploring the experiences and wellbeing of grandchildren, as well as grandparents, and focusing (amongst other things) on ways of strengthening and improving public policy approaches to grandparent carers. The project is innovative both conceptually and methodologically.
