Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry)-Civil Eng

Scholarship Description

Cathodic protection (CP) is a key method of restoring corrosion-damaged maritime infrastructure. Uncertainties exist, however with both design and how ongoing performance of CP is monitored. This project will: (i) clarify CP design; benefiting future designers and contributing significantly to the update od Australian Standard AS 2832.5-2002. Design principles of CP are much debated and uncertainty exists on how ongoing performance of installed CP should be monitored; (ii) Provide a rare opportunity to collect and analyse data from a major CP installation at Swanson Dock, Port Melbourne, and contribute to its longevity; (iii) Develop sound theoretical understanding of CP criteria used to assess the effectiveness of an installation, providing more rigorous procedures for verifying the performance of CP systems, and improving non-destructive tests and assessment criteria.
