Scholarship Description

PhD projects available in deep-sea biology Australia’s deep sea is a place we have only dipped into with nets and fishing lines. Now, in an exciting new venture we will explore the deep waters around our continent. We will go off the edge of the Great Barrier Reef, fly over seamounts and settle on the bottom to characterize life in these unknown realms. Deep Ocean Australia will specifically foster a number of PhD projects and we invite you to become one of these deep-sea pioneers. We will discover new forms of life as well as build a biological picture of ecosystems from the surface to full ocean depths. Biodiscovery, taxonomy, evolution, genetics, physiology, neurobiology, behaviour and history of deep-sea invertebrates and vertebrates are the focal points of the research. Access to specimens is provided through funded expeditions involving submarines and deep-sea trawling. Archival specimens will also be available. This scholarship is offered once only to 4 people. Open for applications from February 15, 2008 until March 14, 2008.

Payment Information

The value of this scholarship is AUD26140 (per annum). This award is to be used for living expenses. This scholarship is paid fortnightly for the period of 3 years.

Research Information

This scholarship is for one of the following fields of research: BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES. It is required that your study starts no earlier than May 1, 2008 and no later than May 1, 2011.

Eligibility

This scholarship requires you to have achieved Honours 1 or equivalent, or Honours 2a or equivalent. Only citizens of Australia or New Zealand or permanent residents can apply.
