Genetics of Eucalyptus oils

Scholarship Description

One of the characteristics of eucalyptus is the volatile oil (terpenes) that gives the Australian bush its characteristic aroma. These oils are important in ecological interactions & also play a role in land restoration efforts because oil-bearing eucalyptus are now widely planted on salt-affected land. Over the past decade there has been a revolution in understanding how plant terpenes are formed. In this project we are using newly discovered genes to explain why the oils of different eucalyptus vary so widely, using the newly completed Eucalyptus genome to help in discovering the genes that influence oil profiles. We are seeking students who have an interest in applying genetics to ecological questions. 1st scholarship is focused on the structure & variation in the genes themselves whereas the 2nd scholarship takes a broader view of the population genetics of trees in their natural environments.
