APAI - Plant Science

Scholarship Description

The PhD student will work in a team of senior researchers, postdocs and industry to contribute to the following research tasks: Forests and plantations are threatened by global change. Tree breeding is currently slow and improved breeding techniques are needed to ensure future tree health and productivity. A new procedure was developed by the project industry partner for targeted polyploidisation of trees, which provides material for physiological and morphological novelty. Polyploid plants can exhibit faster growth and greater environmental resilience than diploid progenitors. This project combines cutting-edge genetics, physiology, and biophysics to profit from recent advances in tree genomics. We will generate fundamental and practical knowledge about polyploidy in trees, and develop rapid screening tools for early detection of superior polyploid lines. This scholarship has closed for 2008. 2009 details will be updated later in the year.
