Determining sea-level history in northeastern Australia from coral microatolls
Scholarship Description
Determining the nature of past sea-level change is an essential basis for forecasting future changes in sea level and understanding the response of reefs and reef islands to such changes. An exciting opportunity exists to pursue PhD research as part of a larger ARC-funded research project aimed at improving our understanding of relative sea-level change in northern Australia over past millennia. The successful candidate(s) will: i) characterise spatial variability in the mid-Holocene highstand using high-resolution chronologies from accurately surveyed sea-level indicators; ii) determine the nature of late-Holocene sea-level variability at high temporal resolution at selected sites; and iii) examine spatial and temporal variations in sea level and interpret their significance in terms of possible forcing factors.
