Physics PhD

Scholarship Description

MAX alloys are a new and exciting class of alloys. They combine the best properties of metals and ceramics by virtue of a unique nanolaminate crystal structure. Materials with this combination of properties have the potential to overcome the problems associated with both the oxidation or corrosion of metals and the brittle failure due to thermal shock of ceramics operating in extreme environments. Determination of the bonding and properties of these and related phases will enable us to build a knowledge base for intelligent design of new materials in the class, allowing the optimization of particular properties for specific applications. In this project ab initio quantum mechanical calculations will be used to predict the bonding and properties (mechanical, electronic and optical) of these materials. The results of the calculations will be compared to experimental measurements of these properties.
